Dear Virgo Rising,
Welcome to October! The through line this month, for you anyway, is trust and tenderness. Essentially it's about surrender: bravely hoping for the best and holding yourself through the process of not knowing. As a fellow rising, I know it's tough for us not to be in control, and just as tough not to be hard on ourselves and everyone else. But this month wants us to stop buying the story that we failed. We don't need to push through alone. We can hibernate a little where it's appropriate, set boundaries where we need to, and ask for the tending we so desperately need. Before we move into the energetics of the month, let me give you a quick snapshot of the astrology—
From October 3rd through November 13th, Venus stations retrograde across your third and second houses, in Scorpio and then Libra. On October 10th there's a New Moon in Libra in your second house of personal finances, self-worth, and self-esteem. On October 24th, Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio in your third house. And on October 25th, the Full Moon in Taurus sits high in the sky in your ninth house.
Before we go any deeper with the astrology, let’s look at your emotional landscape of October through the lens of the tarot. Your theme for October is the Five of Swords. In its most generic depiction, this is the card of feeling like we're messing up pretty badly. It's a card of confrontation, both internal and external, of having our mental defenses up. But the interpretation I've found to be astoundingly more accurate is that it shows up when a part of us believes we've done wrong, that we should have chosen differently. And while those stories can feel wholly valid in the moment, more often than not they're untrue. They're a mental storm rather than the objective reality of what actually happened.
So the wisdom this month, especially with all these retrogrades already asking for review and reconsideration, is to let the mental storm pass without buying into the story. Don't grip the narrative that you've done it all wrong, and especially not the narrative that you are somehow fundamentally bad, terrible, or guilty. Sometimes we do owe an apology. Sometimes we do owe an amends, or need to change our behavior. But guilting and shaming ourselves to the extreme is really just a form of self-punishment that blocks our ability to take ownership and actually make things right. In my 12-step program, the most insightful thing my first sponsor ever told me about making amends was that being overly groveling, profusely crying in shame and embarrassment, is actually a disservice to the person you're apologizing to, because then they're not only witnessing your apology, they also have to take care of you through it. You can be sincere, and showing emotion is fine, but when we over-indulge our shame, it stops us from doing the real work of accountability, which sounds like: I'm not a bad person, but I wish I'd done this differently, and I'm sorry for the way it hurt you.
That's what witnessing the Five of Swords in my own life has taught me. To actually discover where I owe an apology or need to change, I first have to get the mental storm of shame out of the way. As a fellow Virgo rising, we hold ourselves to irrational standards, and we can hold other people to those same standards, becoming perfectionists in the most extreme sense when we're living in our shadow. Self-forgiveness is one of the most important tools we can practice, because it lets us be more compassionate with everyone around us. This is likely a big part of Venus and Mercury retrograde for you, since both begin in Scorpio in your third house of mental perception and communication. Reviewing and interrogating your perception of your circumstances is crucial this month. Just remember that the first story you tell yourself, if it makes you feel fundamentally terrible, is probably not the final conclusion the universe would like you to draw. Once the storm clears, and clearing it is much of your work, you'll almost certainly see your situation in a much clearer light by the end of the month.
Your inner work for October is the Four of Pentacles, a card of sacred, necessary bodily rest and replenishment. This is your hibernation period, the time to hold onto your routines and whatever makes you feel safe, to listen to what your body is actually capable of, and to consider what it's asking for: maybe rest, maybe space, maybe restoration. What's interesting is that Pentacles aren't only about the body. They also relate to resourcing and finances, and when Venus retrogrades into Libra around the 24th or 25th, it enters your second house of personal finances. So this month you're reassessing what you care about, what you're creating, what you're spending money on, and how you're making it. The Four of Pentacles can feel a little stingy, but it's really a reminder to hold onto what you want to hold onto without viewing that as a bad thing. Sometimes we do have to tighten the belt. Sometimes the move is to look in your own closet and enjoy what you already have rather than jumping on the fast-fashion bandwagon.
In my book Magic Days, I describe this card as conservation. It's the feeling of holding onto what gives me grounding, and recognizing that adding more financial stress to my bucket would sabotage the work I already have to do this month. So this is a card of boundaries, with yourself and with others: taking the room and space you need without apology, not overextending yourself physically or financially, and reaching for what feels accessibly good while letting the rest wait. We might not buy a million things this month to fill some god-sized hole, but we can reach for the stuffed animal we've had since childhood, pet the dog, go sit under a tree. In its more negative form this is a card of stinginess, but for me it's a reminder that I have everything I need if I can just relax, slow down, and refill rather than push and add on. This is about nourishment, not laziness.
And then, your external action for the month is Strength reversed. Upright, this card is about facing what frightens us with an open, curious, undefended heart, meeting the inner beast and taming it. Reversed, the courage you're seeking might need some support. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is ask for help. I'll speak for myself. I've been working through pretty severe PTSD from physical abuse I experienced as a child, and I used to think the braver thing was to face it alone and not burden anyone. But the other day, when a hard memory came up, I let myself just cry in my husband's arms. I didn't explain what I was experiencing, I just leaned on him physically and let him hold the space. Crying on someone isn't something I'm prone to, but it felt good to lean on a person I felt safe with.
So the action this month is giving yourself permission to be vulnerable enough to say that this scary thing you're confronting is worthy of support, rather than white-knuckling it alone. Since your other cards are the Five of Swords and the Four of Pentacles, Strength reversed is a reminder that we're only as hard on others as we are on ourselves. If we're not accustomed to asking for help, of course we'll expect other people to brave it alone too. So notice where you've been trying to be strong in isolation, and why, and consider how that's made it harder to be compassionate with others. By letting people help you meet what's scary inside you, you might find it isn't so scary after all. It's just the thing that makes you human. That's the beauty of Strength: the inner lion, the wild animal, has a purity to it, none of the façades people carry. The fear body, the animal body, the lizard brain can all feel intimidating to get to know, but when we do it knowing we can call on support, it becomes even ten percent less scary. Vulnerability and support are where your real strength will lie this month.
As with anything in life, take what you like and leave the rest with this horoscope.
Grateful to be in this cosmic journey alongside you,
Nadine

New moons tend to illuminate the positive traits of a sign, so think beauty, balance, reciprocity, equanimity, and equality. This one lights up your second house of personal finances, self-worth, self-esteem, and self-resourcing, which means there's a lot of second-house energy for you this month. Much like your inner work card, the Four of Pentacles, it's about evaluating what you want versus what you need, what's genuinely bringing value into your life versus what's causing you more stress, and considering what a thoughtful relationship to the physical world could actually look like.
There's the idea that money is energy. I know some of us understandably roll our eyes at that, because bills are real and the cost of living has gone up in nearly every city. It's honestly one of the categories where I have the hardest time getting spiritual. But the one thing I've truly come to understand over the past few years is that my energy around what I bring into my life affects me a lot. I can tend to be a shopaholic. I'm very generous with other people, an attribute I actually like about myself, but I can also fall into holes with overspending that end up stressing me out. You buy a bunch of crap thinking it'll change your life, and instead it just clogs your apartment until getting rid of it becomes its own overwhelming task. Lately I've been sampling so many different perfumes from so many brands that I wake up with decision fatigue about which to wear, and I don't really like any of them, because they were bought impulsively and none of them actually speak to me. It sounds like a silly metaphor, but this new moon in your second house wants you to get crystal fucking clear about what you want to smell like, about what beauty you want to bring into your life, your home, and your senses, and to stop wasting time, energy, and money on things that aren't bringing you the nourishment you're actually looking for.
New moons are for fresh starts, so this is an opportunity for a new chapter around money, resources, and self-worth. Its opposition to Saturn retrograde in your eighth house of shared resources means this fresh start will butt up against old fears, around shared resources, debt, or a need to be hypervigilant about intimacy. It's a tension between the hope you'd like to bring to this new moon and the heaviness of past experience. If you've struggled with abundance, both in your own life and intergenerationally, part of this Saturn retrograde is about emancipating yourself from inherited behaviors and building a more balanced nervous system that can show you what you're really looking for. I've noticed my own overspending creeps up when life feels overwhelming. Some people doom-scroll; some of us online shop, and Pinterest is a dangerous vehicle for me because I tell myself it's for design inspiration and then somehow end up checking out. But it's a concrete example of what this new moon is asking: what does my relationship with physical resourcing actually want to be, both around the income I create and the things I spend on? It goes both ways. We can make plenty of money, but if we were never taught to enjoy our resources or to plan long-term, it doesn't matter how much comes in if we're spending it on things we don't actually want.
This new moon also forms a beautiful sextile to Jupiter in Leo in your twelfth house, offering quiet, behind-the-scenes optimism, a restful and almost subconscious benevolence moving through you. It's giving you the chance to dream up a greater future for yourself and your inner child, and to consider what's genuinely worth spending money on and making money for. Because I don't know many children, let alone inner children, who are actually looking for more things. Sure, some of us buy out of a trauma response, but kids mostly want experiences, and when they do want an object, they've usually longed for it a long time. This connection to Jupiter is asking what the soul wants, going deeper into our real needs and desires.
The card I pulled here, as both advice and anchor, is a beautiful one: the Nine of Cups. It's a tender, vulnerable energy, the deep wish card, the heart's desire. It's about being brave enough to open to what your soul is calling for and to name what you truly want. It's scary to say out loud what we want, because we're afraid of being rejected or disappointed, but this new moon and the Nine of Cups invite you to hope for something better even when it feels vulnerable. It's a bit like being a child with a wish list and feeling the disappointment of getting something different from what you asked for. That experience teaches a lot of us not to name the one thing we want, so we dance around it. Fast fashion is a good example: we buy ten random things instead of the one thoughtfully made thing we really want, because it can feel vulnerable to ask, am I worthy of this beautiful thing? Am I worthy of peace, of balance, of financial security, of feeling stable in my body?
There's a luxury to this new moon that requires optimism and hope, a treat-yourself energy in the truest sense, the kind the soul is longing for rather than the quick band-aid of the ego.
Full Moon in 2° Taurus
October 25th, 2026, at 9:11 pm PT
The full moon arrives at 2° of Taurus, sitting high in your ninth house of belief systems and the conclusions we draw. The ninth house is where we create long-term meaning, and it sits opposite the third house, where we take in information from our immediate environment. Many astrologers connect the third house to early life: our siblings, first friendships, the school we attended, the neighborhood we grew up in, essentially where our humanness first meets the world. The ninth house is where we make meaning of all of it. Full moons are about polarity and, mostly, awareness. They're a culmination point where we can see something with more clarity than before. This one spotlights your belief systems, your fears, and your scarcity, and it potentially opens more room for abundance than you were previously willing to consider. That tracks with the rest of your month, with Venus retrograde and a tarot spread full of the Four of Pentacles and the Five of Swords, all of it asking why you're gripping so tightly, and echoing the new moon's question of what abundance and security actually mean for you.
Taurus is the sign of stability, but also of earthly pleasures and abundance. At its most benevolent it's the full harvest, the person who is rich in every sense and knows how to be generous toward themselves and others. Landing the day after Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio in your third house, this full moon begs the question of whether your perception of your life is actually a belief system you want to hold onto. We might have grown up with trauma, strife, illness, or intergenerational fear around money. All of that can be entirely valid and true, and the ninth house is still where we decide what we want to believe going forward. Do I want this framework to dictate the rest of my life, or do I want to start creating a new narrative?
This moon is conjunct Chiron, the wounded healer, in Aries in your eighth house, so it marks a healing process you're finishing, where old wounds around trust, intimacy, and shared resources rise to the surface to be tended. If you have a history of not receiving, of always being the generous one while no one was generous with you, this full moon conjunct Chiron invites you to say: I acknowledge my inner child's fear of letting go, I acknowledge they never quite feel that anyone shows up for them, and I'm still going to try my hardest to build a new point of view. And remember, your action this month is Strength reversed, so you don't have to build that new point of view alone. That might be completely unrealistic anyway. Seek out support, seek out a different perspective under this full moon. The best way I know to navigate a full moon is also just to sit and witness it. I know it sounds woo, but part of my work is asking the moon what it thinks, and this Taurus moon is ripe, generous, and abundant, someone who knows how to enjoy the fruits of their labor. So you can sit beneath it like a student and say: I've only known fear and scarcity, I'm terrified of wanting and needing things, but I'd like to learn a new trick, so what would you have me know?
This is also the day Venus, already retrograde, first enters Libra in your second house of personal finances, conjunct the sun, so a values- and money-based review layers onto this culmination around fear, scarcity, and abundance. I'll speak for myself again, as a fellow Virgo rising: there's a lot of intergenerational financial trauma in my family. My mom came from the projects of Akron, Ohio, and I watched my parents grow into wealth in real time, which was complicated, because you can change your circumstances and live in genuine abundance and still feel you can't relax, still feel there's something to watch out for. Something I have to interrogate often is whether, on some level, I actually feel more comfortable in debt or financial insecurity, which sounds a little fucked up, but maybe some of you will relate. Being squeezed catapults me into action, while true financial freedom is a state I'm still learning to sit in. For me it can tie back to receiving, to fears of accepting help. It runs the gamut.
The card I pulled as advice and anchor is the Seven of Wands, a card of hypervigilance. Don't worry, the advice isn't to stay hypervigilant; it's to interrogate your hypervigilance. If you're unsure whether it's safe to hope for something better, whether it's safe to drop your armor, this card doesn't hand you the answer, but it does ask you to hold yourself in the not-knowing until things clear after the full moon. So rather than forcing a defensive stance or buying into the fear, witness yourself, witness the fear and discomfort with compassion, and stay present through the vulnerability. If you're questioning whether to continue a certain stream of income or keep up a certain financial habit, letting go can be genuinely scary. Taurus gets as set in its ways as Scorpio does, since both are fixed signs, and the hardest habits to kick are the deeply ingrained ones, the most well-trodden neural pathways.
This full moon simply helps you become a more detached observer of those behaviors, looking at them without judgment and with the compassion you'd offer another person. The hope is that you come away willing to grow a new, more generous, full-harvest perspective on where you want to be as a human being.

Venus Retrograde
October 3rd—November 13th, 2026
Venus, the planet of love, money, self-worth, and resourcing, stations retrograde across Scorpio and Libra. Venus retrograde asks you to do all the "re" words, to reassess, reevaluate, reconsider, revamp, and revise what you value, rather than starting anything new. This isn't a time for manifestation; it's a season for reevaluation and, potentially, for letting go of and dismantling certain beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. Retrogrades get a bad reputation, but I actually love them. On the surface they seem to delay things or make us wonder why something isn't happening sooner, but really they save us from ourselves, insisting that something be put in its rightful place before we build on top of it. The metaphor I like is that before we plant new flowers in the garden, we should probably de-weed it first. That's the entire point and vibe of a Venus retrograde.
There are two phases. From October 3rd through the 25th, Venus retrogrades in Scorpio, in your third house. From October 25th through November 13th, it moves into Libra and your second house of personal finances. In phase one, Venus retrograde in Scorpio begs for depth, honesty, and full emotional exposure. This isn't the season for surface-level pleasantries. In your third house, that intensity lands squarely around communication and perception, and for some of you around siblings, neighbors, and close friends, but most importantly around your perspective on your own life. When you wake up each day, do you like your environment, do you like your life, yes or no? Expect the deeper truth behind your perception of your conversations to surface. You may find yourself reassessing what you've left unsaid in certain relationships, interrogating the real feeling underneath what used to be a polite exchange. Some old threads and conversations with people in your daily environment may need honest re-examination. The questions here are very Scorpio-flavored: what am I not saying, where have I been keeping things surface-level to avoid intimacy, and what conversations have I been avoiding?
This ties back to your monthly theme, the Five of Swords. Watch for intensity in how you communicate, because Scorpio and retrogrades in the third house can stir up jealousy, suspicion, and reading too much between the lines, while what the Five of Swords benefits from is total honest clarity. Say the fearful thought out loud so the other person can either confirm it or tell you, no, that's not how I feel at all. It's an invitation into honesty and depth without the spiral that usually comes with it.
Then, starting October 25th, Venus enters its true home in Libra, where it feels far more at ease than in Scorpio, so this second phase should be gentler in tone. The energy softens away from probing depth and toward balance, fairness, harmony, and coming back to center. In your second house the focus moves to resourcing: money, possessions, self-worth, self-esteem, and what we deem ourselves worthy of. Libra's fairness question becomes, is there balance between what I give and what I receive, and is my generosity reciprocated? As we all know, relationships are never truly 50-50, and there's no way to perfectly quantify whether we're fairly compensated for our skills. But Libra wants us to ask whether it feels reciprocal, because that's the more important question. It's less about market value or whether your partner matches your exact effort, and more about an essential felt sense of homeostasis: does it feel like what I'm giving the world is coming back to me energetically, am I asking for enough, and am I giving enough? For me, Libra rarely turns out to be about being taken for a ride and needing to stop being so generous. In my marriage it's usually the opposite: I'm being far too generous in one area while not expecting enough in another. My husband and I each have our propensities, more withheld in one category, extremely generous and forthcoming in another.
What Libra wants is to reset the scales. If within your relationship or business partnership you're typically the one holding a lot of emotional space while the other attends to life's practical details, this Venus retrograde might have you say, I'd rather take on more of the details so I can carry a little less emotional labor, and I'd like them to pick up more of that emotional work in return. It's not about anyone screwing anyone over. It's about whether the scales feel roughly balanced across your relational and financial life. Since the second house, Venus, and Libra all circle back to resourcing, this second half of the retrograde is a good window to review your budgets, rates, and financial agreements, and for some of you, literally your salary. If you're freelance, it's a time to have compensation conversations and to consider whether you've really raised your prices in line with the market, the economy, and inflation, all before Venus goes direct on November 13th.
The card I pulled as anchor and advice is, interestingly, the Ace of Wands, a card of rapid movement. I can't think of anything less rapid than Venus retrograde, which quite literally slows us down as the planet spins more slowly. But what it suggests to me is that even while we're re-reviewing our homework, resetting scales, and backtracking through old conversations, something is already in motion and on its way. The retrograde says wait and reassess; the card says trust that it's coming. So do the inner review without gripping, forcing outcomes, or stressing about delay. It's like waiting for a package: you could refresh the tracking every hour out of anxiety, or you could get on with your life and trust it'll arrive. Stay open to receiving, especially in matters of value, worth, connection, and trust. Both the Scorpio work of honesty and deep interrogation and the Libra work of resourcing, balance, and compensation may feel like backlog you'd rather skip in favor of the bigger shit in your life, but trust that the bigger stuff is already moving. Just focus on what you want, why you want it, and what it's going to look like.
October Journal prompts:
Where am I still holding the story that I messed up or should have done things differently? If that story is a mental storm and not the actual truth, what does the calmer, more accurate version sound like?
What already gives me grounding that I could simply enjoy this month, and what am I tempted to buy, add, or chase mostly because life feels overwhelming?
Where have I been white-knuckling something on my own, and what would it take to let one trusted person help me carry it?
If I stopped bracing for disappointment, what is the one thing I actually want? And why does naming it out loud feel risky?
Which of my beliefs about money, worth, and scarcity did I inherit, and which do I actually want to keep? Where does the give-and-take in my life feel out of balance right now?
